Who would have thought that Giuliana Rancic’s offensive comments on Zendaya’s dreadlocked red carpet look at the Oscar’s would help spark a movement that has even Barbie on board.
The controversy surrounding 19-year-old Zendaya Coleman’s 2015 Oscars hairstyle made numerous headlines earlier this year as former E! correspondent, Giuliana Rancic, made distasteful comments about her faux dreadlocks she rocked.
But even still, having started off things this year on a sour note, Zendaya has managed to continue to slay every red carpet she struts down and dominate in the entertainment industry. Not to mention, this month alone she landed on four solo covers of Hunger Magazine, served face on the cover of Galore Mag and was a judge for the Miss America pageant. Go girl!
Most recently, iconic fashion doll brand, Barbie, has taken notice of the multi-talented beauty too. Yesterday (Sept. 19), they announced that they will be honoring the rising starlet with her very own, one-of-a-kind doll for encouraging girls to “raise their voices.” The doll honors Coleman’s 2015 Oscars getup – dreadlocks and all – in which she took a stand and inspired individuals to be themselves.
“I’m excited to be a part of the new direction the Barbie brand is headed, specifically how they are celebrating diversity in the line and encouraging kids to raise their voices,” Zendaya said in a statement. “It’s a positive message to send to my fans, including my nieces who are coming with me to the concert.”
Zendaya will be honored with her one-of-a-kind doll at the Barbie Rock ‘N Royals Concert Experience in Hollywood next weekend. There is no word if these dolls will hit store shelves for consumers, but either way, this is yet another rightfully deserved big win for Ms. Coleman.
