Robert De Niro takes on a villianistic form for his latest role as shady investment banker turned convict, Bernie Madoff.
De Niro plays the Wall Street con man for HBO’s “The Wizard of Lies” coming in May of this year. The TV movie is based on Diana B. Henriques’ book of the same name, “The Wizard of Lies” and follows the rise and fall of the investor, who profited an estimated $65 billion from scamming thousands of investors to trust him with their money.
“What he did is beyond my comprehension, so there’s a disconnect somehow in him,” De Niro told reporters at the Television Critics Association event on Saturday. “And I still would like to understand. I did the best I could, but I don’t understand.”
The film also stars Michelle Pfeiffer as Ruth Madoff, Kristen Connolly, Alessandro Nivola, Hank Azaria and Lily Rabe.
