Someone That You Need to Watch: Rico G From Oakland to NYC

Rico G is an independent artist out of Oakland who most recently performed at Mase TV’s Official Launch Party at The Liberty NYC on Sept 24th. With a stage presence that commands everyone’s attention, and the ability to bring his West Coast flavor to the hardcore NYC streets, Rico G is Someone that you Need to Watch!

The Hofstra University graduate decided to reside in New York to pursue Hip Hop in its birthplace. Rico’s music is inspired by artists such as Common, Kanye West Jay Z, Tupac, Notorious B.I.G., as well as new comers J. Cole, and Kendrick Lamar. Early on his athletic potential led him toward courts and fields rather than studios and stages. However, his lifetime as an athlete and a fan of sports, makes up a significant portion of his lyrical content.

Rico paid close attention to the perilous streets of Oakland, and will be the first to tell you that he is not a murderer, he never sold crack, and has never been a pimp. Yet in still, he has developed a unique second-hand perspective of the crime filled and financially deprived neighborhoods of Oakland, which he shares with his audience through his music.

The death of his father in 2009, and the end of his football career, opened the door for what Rico would soon find to be his true passion: music. As his senior year of college came and went, the December 2011 graduate made the tough decision to remove himself from the full-time work world indefinitely and pursue a career many people told him is unattainable. Referring to his music as think music, Rico uses feedback from his listeners to disprove doubters, and be the driving force behind his relentless pursuit of success.

Always working on a few projects with producers both national and overseas from the United States to France to Brazil, Rico G introduced himself to the world with his first Mix tape, ‘No Talking in the Previews’ released on December 7, 2012, his late father’s birthday. Currently, he is recording his sequel project, ‘No Talking in the Previews 2: The Myth of Meant To Be’, which proves to the world the message that anything is possible.

“I have complex thoughts, and my music is a collection of my thoughts. It’s not always simple to understand, and if you are one of the billion or so people in the world who don’t like to think, you may or may not like it; but if you are someone who doesn’t mind thinking a little bit, I guarantee you will appreciate think music.”
