The number of people stopped and frisked by cops in the city has dropped because the policy worked, Mayor Bloomberg boasted Wednesday.
“It’s been going down because it’s been effective,” Hizzoner said. “I think there’s just no question.”
Cops performed 58,088 stop-and-frisks from April through June, a plunge of 57%. During the same period last year, there were 133,934 stops. Critics charge the city should stop using the tactic.
“In truth, the drop in stops and the corresponding drop in murders clearly show that we don’t need abusive stop-and-frisk to be safe,” said Christopher Dunn, associate legal director of the New York Civil Liberties Union.
