The writers for “Law & Order: SVU” are famous for taking some of their episode plots straight from news headlines. Last winter, they aired an episode inspired by Chris Brown and Rihanna’s domestic abuse incident from 2009. And last fall, they aired a Trayvon Martin-inspired episode. Now, they’re taking on the Solange/Jay Z and Ray Rice elevator assaults for a new episode titled, “American Disgrace.”
According to the Huffington Post, the episode, which is scheduled to air Wednesday, basketball star Shakir “The Shark” Wilkins is accused of rape by a PR rep for his clothing line. Things take an interesting turn when the employee flips out and begins fighting him inside of an elevator. The fight eventually spills out into a paparazzi-filled lobby and well, the rest is history.
“I’m trying to keep the show 10 minutes ahead of the news,” “Law & Order: SVU” showrunner Warren Leight told the Huffington Post. “I loved the idea of just a silent black and white scene, then sound goes out. You kinda wanna know what’s going on.”
Apparently, the episode will also include the Donald Sterling scandal; however, the evidence of that is not made apparent in the sneak peek.
