JBL Charge 2 Portable Bluetooth Speaker: Little Life of The Party [Review]

If you were looking for a portable speaker that actually delivers quality sound along with a bunch of other fantastic features – the JBL Charge 2 is your best bet. This portable Bluetooth speaker is small but has superior sound and more.

  • Stream your music wirelessly via Bluetooth®
  • A built in 6000mAh battery for 12 hours of playback and charging your portable devices
  • Social mode so everyone can share their music
  • Built-in Microphone – The built-in microphone allows you to answer calls without skipping a beat.
  • Passive Radiators – Passive radiators field enough bass for you to actually see them trembling from the outside.

The Charge 2 is very attractive and simply designed. The cylindrical design is unique – you can either stand it up lay it down.  You have the main controls on the top of the speaker, and right behind you have your USB port, 3.5mm port, and microUSB for charging. Use those ports to charge your portable devices using it’s 6000 mAh battery which comes in handy. It’s also a nice size so it is pretty portable and light at a bit over a pound.

Pairing the speaker to other devices is pretty simple and effortless. Use the pairing button on the top of the speaker, and it will also remember the devices that it has been paired to. Flawless  pairing done with the iPhone 5S, HTC One M8, and the Samsung Galaxy s5.

Battery Life

The battery life is quite impressive and does in fact allow you to enjoy your favorite tunes up to 12 hours. I’ve played music for continuous hours at work without having to charge it for a while. When the battery finally runs out (party done), it will take about 2ish hours to charge back up…. only to start the party all over again.

The 6000mAh battery was able to fully charge my iPhone and still have battery left to rock with. You could get at least two full charges if that’s all you’re using it for. Sometimes it will be less or more depending on the device you have and the size of the battery.

Social Mode

This feature is pretty cool. Social mode allows you to have up to 3 devices take turns playing tunes of their choice. Everyone can be happy! I always love features that allow more than one person to be involved, like the the ShareMe Function on the Synchros E40 BT’s.  This is probably one of my favorite features on the Charge 2 and it works pretty well. Just stay within range so your connection won’t be interrupted.

Built In Microphone

The built in microphone is also a great addition to this already powerful speaker. I was able to use it with no issues in terms of crackling etc – always pretty crisp with sound and clarity BUT it can be a bit low.

Most importantly, the sound quality on the Charge 2 is impressive for a speaker of it’s size. Most times it will deliver quality bass and crisp vocals, but if the track is really bass heavy it can become too overpowering distorting the sound. It really depends on the type of song you’re listening to but for the most part the quality is pretty up there. For a speaker this size, it is definitely powerful.

Available for $149.95 via JBL’s website HERE and other select retailers. It comes in black, blue, red, purple and white.

 The Bottom Line:

I like the Charge 2 and would recommend it. It is one of the better portable Bluetooth speakers out there. It’s stylish, packs a punch and has all the bells and whistles one would want. Majority of the time the sound is great, you can have a 3 way musical party, take calls with no hassle, charge your other devices and take it with you if need be. It would have been nice if it came with a case, so just be careful when lugging it around – although it is pretty durable it is not splash ready at all.
